Virtual services

The NHS is increasingly using virtual wards to provide care through virtual consultations, remote diagnostics, and, where appropriate, therapeutic interventions.

Our outpatient virtual services are designed to improve patient outcomes and experiences, and, importantly, to increase timely access to specialist care.

Demand optimisation is an important element of our virtual services. Each speciality benefits from high-impact interventions such as referral management and GP education, as well as training to ensure patients are appropriately signposted to the right service the first time. We maintain important interdependencies with local services to reduce unwarranted variation in care pathways.

ICAN virtual service guidance

Where local clinicians are unavailable, or there is no local coverage in a particular speciality, GPs can access advice and guidance via the Integrated Clinical Advice Network (ICAN). This service is the result of innovative collaboration with our partner, Cinapsis. Together, we provide several new ‘care delivery’ models that focus on integrating primary and secondary care.

Fully virtual outpatient services

Our fully virtual, adaptable outpatient services are easily accessible to primary and secondary care organisations. These flexible, scalable services increase the capacity of a constrained workforce, improve patient outcomes and reduce pressure on acute services by supporting patients in getting the care they need at home.
