Introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based approach to psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviours. It helps you to develop healthier ways of thinking and acting, which can improve your mental health and wellbeing.

CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected. It is effective for a wide range of mental health conditions and provides practical tools to manage your symptoms.

Mental health conditions treated by Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT

Depression: helps individuals challenge negative thoughts and engage in activities that improve mood.

Anxiety disorders: teaches skills to manage worry, panic, and phobias.

What to expect when you start treatment

Starting therapy can be daunting and it takes a lot of courage to make the first step. Your sessions will be weekly for up to one hour with the same therapist. It is important to attend every session as regular CBT keeps the momentum going. This will make it easier for you to build on progress and aids consistency and continuity. Regular sessions also support you to reach your therapeutic goals and improve overall wellbeing.

Your first session

You will talk with your therapist to identify the difficulties you are facing and set specific goals. You can then address and work towards these goals at every following session. Your therapist will also ask you to complete a set of questionnaires during each session, to review as you progress in therapy. You will learn about the connection between your thoughts, feelings, physical symptoms, and behaviours and how this impacts your mental health.

Throughout your therapy

You will learn various CBT techniques to challenge your thinking and behaviours. Your therapist will also set tasks for you to complete between your sessions. These tasks will help you learn skills and practise what you have discussed in therapy.

After your therapy

Towards the end of therapy, you will develop a relapse prevention plan with your therapist. This will enable you to reflect on your learning and prepare you for discharge from the service, so you can continue to practise the skills you have learnt.
