Xyla’s NHS Digital Weight Management Programme is a free 12-week service for people living with obesity alongside diabetes or high blood pressure. This is what that experience looked like for Annette.
Annette had tried to lose weight before without success. When she joined the NHS Digital Weight Management Programme in June 2025, she wasn’t looking for a dramatic overhaul. She wanted an approach that felt manageable, with sustainable healthy behaviour change that would last.
Annette had some habits already in place before she started. She had meal planned previously and was not starting from scratch, but the changes she needed to make weren’t coming together on her own. Losing weight had been a consistent challenge and she needed both structure and support to make progress that would last.
The changes Annette made were practical. She adjusted her portions to recommended amounts, added more vegetables and salad to her meals and began an exercise routine that she built on steadily with guidance from her coach throughout the programme.
She had more confidence to weigh in weekly and track her weight loss, which was one of the things that kept her moving forward.
The coaching calls were scheduled at a convenient time, kept to a manageable length and felt personal rather than clinical. She valued how her coach remembered details from previous conversations, which meant each session built on what had come before rather than starting over.
Midway through the programme, Annette went away for a few days and returned having gained a few pounds. Rather than treating it as a reason to stop, she returned to her plan, spoke honestly with her coach about what had happened and focused on the next goal rather than the setback.
She lost the weight she had regained and kept going.
“A holiday makes dieting more tricky […] Getting back on track as soon as possible was a positive. Don’t beat yourself up about it. What goal can I set going forward? That’s what I did.”
9kg lost, equal to 5% of starting body weight
Cholesterol reduced
Two inches lost off her waist and one dress size down
Exercise routine established and maintained
Returned to plan after a holiday setback without losing overall progress programme
Dietary changes sustained as part of everyday life
By the end of the programme, Annette’s cholesterol had reduced, she had lost two inches off her waist, dropped one dress size and lost 9kg, equal to 5% of her starting body weight.
“I genuinely feel like a different person […] Both physically and mentally.”
