Right to Choose: Online ADHD assessments for adults

Xyla is now accepting GP referrals through the Right to Choose pathway for individuals aged 18 and over who are registered with a GP in North West London or Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

How to get an assessment

If you’re seeking an online ADHD assessment with Xyla under the NHS Right to Choose pathway, all referrals must be made through a GP. You do not need to get in touch with us to refer yourself.

If you have not already done so, please contact your GP to request a referral to Xyla.

Your Right to Choose journey

From GP referral to post-assessment support, here’s what to expect with Xyla

1

GP referral

Book an appointment with your registered GP practice to discuss your ADHD symptoms and request a referral to Xyla under Right to Choose.

2

Referral confirmation

Once your GP completes your referral, you’ll receive an email from Xyla. If you’re expecting this email and haven’t received it yet, please check your spam folders or contact your GP.

3

Pre-assessment forms

After we confirm the referral, you’ll receive additional forms to complete, helping us gather important information for your assessment. You can submit all forms online.

4

Your online ADHD assessment

Your assessment will take place online through a secure video platform. A phone, laptop or tablet is needed, along with a private space to talk.

5

Outcome and feedback session

Your clinician will arrange a separate feedback session to share the diagnostic outcome. A detailed written report will be provided, outlining the findings and personalised recommendations.

6

Post-assessment support

Following the diagnostic outcome, next steps and recommendations will be discussed together with your clinician. Support sessions or medication may be recommended, depending on individual needs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I refer myself for an assessment?

No. All referrals must be made by a GP under the Right to Choose pathway. If you haven’t already done so, please book an appointment with your registered GP to discuss being referred to Xyla.

I live outside North West London or Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Can I still choose Xyla?

Xyla currently accepts referrals from GP practices in these areas only. If you are registered with a GP outside of these areas, please check back for regular updates as we are actively expanding access. For details of other providers, visit ADHD UK.

What if my GP is unsure about Right to Choose?

Patients are entitled to request a referral under Right to Choose. More information and guidance to help with your GP referral is available via ADHD UK.

Is there a cost for the assessment?

No. The assessment is fully funded by the NHS under Right to Choose, so there is no cost to you.

Is the assessment delivered online?

Yes. Assessments are delivered online using a secure video platform and are carried out by experienced clinicians.

A phone, laptop or tablet with internet access is needed.

What happens after the assessment?

A detailed report is provided following the assessment. Your outcome and recommendations are discussed during a feedback session with the clinician.

Xyla will also share relevant information with the GP to support any agreed next steps.

When will I hear from Xyla after my GP refers me?

After the GP submits the referral, a confirmation email is usually sent within five working days.

If this email has not been received, please check spam or junk folders. If it cannot be found, contact your GP to confirm the referral has been sent.

How long does the assessment take?

Your online assessment can last up to 3 hours. You will be offered breaks, and the assessment can be split across more than one day if reasonable adjustments are needed.

Important information about your Right to Choose

It’s important to know that there are some situations where you cannot exercise your right to choose your service provider. You won’t be able to choose if:

  • You are receiving urgent or emergency care.
  • You are already getting treatment for the condition you’re being referred for.
  • You are in prison, temporarily released from prison, or in other specific settings (like a court, secure children’s home, secure training centre, immigration removal centre, or a young offender’s institution).
  • You are held in a hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983.
  • You are a serving member of the armed forces (but your family members in England have the same rights as other residents).

If any of these apply to you, you will not be able to directly choose Xyla as your provider at this time. If you’re unsure or have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us for a confidential discussion.

Please note: We are not an emergency service, if you are in crisis and need urgent support or are worried about immediate risk of harm to self or others, please call 999. Alternatively, you can contact your GP and ask for an emergency appointment or visit your local A&E department in the United Kingdom. You can also contact the following services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week: NHS Helpline (111) and Samaritans (116 123)
