Registered Nurse (Ophthalmology)

Weekend Opportunities | September 2026 to March 2027

Xyla Healthcare is recruiting experienced Ophthalmology Registered Nurses, helping to reduce cataract waiting lists through a dedicated weekend cataract service.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a specialist ophthalmology team delivering high-quality patient care across cataract assessment clinics, theatre services, and pre/post-operative recovery areas. 

The Role

As an Ophthalmology Registered Nurse, you will play a key role in delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care throughout the cataract pathway. Responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting consultant-led cataract assessment clinics.
  • Undertaking pre-operative patient assessments and admissions.
  • Delivering pre and post-operative nursing care.
  • Assisting with ophthalmic procedures and patient preparation.
  • Completing and maintaining accurate clinical documentation.
  • Providing patient education and discharge information.
  • Working closely with consultants, theatre teams, healthcare support workers, and operational staff to ensure a seamless patient journey.

Service Overview

The service is designed to deliver care for up to 2,500 cataract patients through a high-volume “See & Treat” model, including:

  • Cataract Assessment Clinics (CAC)
  • Pre-operative consultations and admissions
  • Unilateral and bilateral cataract surgery
  • Post-operative recovery and discharge planning

Requirements

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Previous NHS experience.
  • Ophthalmology nursing experience.
  • Experience supporting cataract assessment clinics, day surgery, theatres, or recovery services.
  • Excellent communication and patient care skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to patient safety, quality, and clinical governance.

Desirable

  • Experience as an Ophthalmic Scrub Nurse.
  • Cataract pathway experience.
  • Experience within elective recovery or insourcing programmes.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmology clinical pathways and best practice.

Working Pattern

  • Weekend shifts only (Saturday and Sunday).
  • Service hours: 08:00 to 18:00.
  • Contract running until March 2027, with the possibility of extension.
