Boosting cardiology diagnostic capacity for Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust

Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust partnered with Xyla to rapidly increase cardiac diagnostic capacity and keep patients moving through care. By providing flexible echocardiography and Holter analysis support, Xyla helped ease pressure on internal teams and strengthen service resilience during periods of high demand.

The challenge

Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust faced growing demand for cardiac diagnostics as referral volumes increased and waiting lists began to rise. Capacity constraints meant patients waited longer for routine transthoracic echocardiography, which risked delaying diagnosis and treatment planning. The trust was also managing rising backlogs in Holter monitoring analysis, which created delays in clinical decision-making and placed additional pressure on the cardiology team.

Why Xyla?

Derby and Burton selected Xyla because they needed a partner who could increase diagnostic capacity quickly while maintaining high clinical standards. Xyla’s proven experience in NHS cardiology services and ability to supply skilled BSE-accredited physiologists and analysts at pace gave the trust the confidence that quality would remain consistent. Our flexible model, clear communication and robust quality assurance meant the service aligned smoothly with local workflows and information governance from day one.

The solution

Xyla worked with the trust to deliver a combined echocardiography and Holter analysis service that strengthened capacity while fitting seamlessly into established governance and reporting processes. Experienced BSE-accredited cardiac physiologists provided echocardiography across four sites, including two Community Diagnostic Centres, ensuring patients continued to access high-quality scans close to home. All imaging followed BSE guidance and was supported by Xyla’s internal auditing and quality assurance.

At the same time, Xyla’s remote diagnostics team helped the trust address backlogs in Holter monitoring. Raw ambulatory ECG data was transferred securely through the Sentinel RDT system, allowing Xyla to analyse recordings promptly and upload completed reports into the trust’s environment. This protected patient information, removed manual handling and supported safe, compliant data management.

The flexible service model meant Derby and Burton could respond to fluctuations in demand without increasing long-term workforce pressures, helping maintain continuity of care during periods of high activity.

“Xyla’s communication, cooperation, produced reports and overall performance were superior. Throughout the process the highlights have been good turnaround times, good communication and their ability to adapt as our service develops and changes. The service solved our initial challenges and has given us more flexibility, allowing us to better manage our waitlist and balance our staffing plans. We continue to work with Xyla for Holter analysis and have no intention of stopping in the immediate future.”

Impact

Greater diagnostic capacity and reduced backlogs

Xyla delivered more than 15,600 echocardiograms across four sites, including two Community Diagnostic Centres, and completed 4,610 ambulatory ECG analysis reports within twelve months. This increased capacity helped the trust keep pace with rising demand, reduced Holter backlogs and supported faster clinical decision making.

Improved service resilience during high demand

A combination of multisite delivery and remote Holter analysis meant the trust could maintain continuity of care during periods of increased activity. This flexible model provided additional capacity without adding long term workforce pressure.

Consistent, high-quality reporting

All echocardiograms were performed by BSE accredited specialists and supported by regular auditing. This ensured reliable and standardised reporting across all locations.

Safe and compliant data handling

Using the secure Sentinel RDT transfer system kept patient data within a protected environment, reduced manual handling and ensured seamless integration with trust systems.
