As demand for echocardiography continues to grow across the NHS, healthcare providers face an ongoing challenge: how do you expand capacity without compromising quality?
A recent service evaluation at Xyla Services highlights the answer. It shows that quality is not maintained through measurement alone, but through a continuous cycle of clinical audit, structured feedback and professional development that supports clinicians to improve over time.
Clinical audit has long been recognised as an essential part of clinical governance, helping organisations assess whether practice aligns with recognised standards. However, when combined with education, mentoring and supportive performance management, audit becomes much more than a compliance exercise, it becomes a powerful driver of quality improvement.
The evaluation explored the impact of repeated clinical audits across Xyla’s echocardiography workforce over a two-year period. Using a standardised audit tool, every echocardiographer underwent regular quality assessments covering image quality, adherence to the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) minimum dataset, measurement accuracy, diagnostic interpretation and reporting quality.
Importantly, the findings were used to inform action. Clinicians received personalised feedback alongside access to online learning, multidisciplinary case review meetings, one-to-one support and, where needed, structured Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs). This ensured audit findings translated into meaningful development and measurable improvement.
The evaluation demonstrated clear and consistent improvements across the workforce. Average audit scores increased from 91.4% in 2024 to 94.0% in 2025, representing a statistically significant improvement. Even more encouraging was the shift across the entire workforce.
Key findings included:
These findings suggest that frequent audit not only supports those requiring additional development but also encourages high-performing clinicians to continue striving for excellence.
One of the most important findings from the evaluation is that audit alone does not improve quality. The greatest impact came from embedding audit within a wider clinical governance framework that actively supports learning and development.
Alongside repeated audit cycles, Xyla introduced structured online education, enhanced feedback processes, revised standard operating procedures, monthly Echo Review Meetings and competency-based training. Together, these initiatives created opportunities for reflection, knowledge sharing and ongoing skills development.
This approach aligns closely with the British Society of Echocardiography’s Quality Framework, which emphasises the importance of integrating governance, education, standardisation and continuous professional development to deliver consistently high-quality care.
While the evaluation focused on professional performance rather than patient outcomes, the implications for patient care are clear.
Higher-quality imaging, more accurate reporting and greater adherence to national standards help support informed clinical decision-making and improve consistency across services. This is particularly important as diagnostic services continue to expand in response to rising demand.
For independent providers supporting NHS diagnostic capacity, maintaining robust governance processes is essential. Frequent audit provides reassurance that quality standards are being maintained while identifying opportunities for ongoing improvement.
As demand for NHS diagnostic services continues to increase, workforce development must keep pace with service expansion.
This evaluation demonstrates that regular clinical audit, when combined with education, structured feedback and supportive leadership, can deliver meaningful improvements across an entire workforce. It helps strengthen clinical governance, supports professional development and promotes consistently high standards of care.
Rather than being viewed as a retrospective inspection process, clinical audit should be recognised as a continuous learning system that drives improvement, supports quality assurance and enables sustainable service growth.
For organisations committed to delivering high-quality echocardiography services, the message is clear: the most effective audit programmes do not simply measure performance. They help improve it.
At Xyla, quality is built into every stage of service delivery. Through robust clinical governance, regular audit, ongoing professional development and a commitment to continuous improvement, we help NHS organisations expand diagnostic capacity while maintaining high clinical standards.
Our approach provides commissioners with confidence that services are delivering safe, consistent and high-quality care, supported by clear governance processes and an experienced clinical workforce.
