Guided self-help is a brief therapy based on a low-intensity version of CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). The aim of it is to enable the patient to become their own therapist which centres around the concept that people are the best managers of their mental health. Unlike some other modalities of talking therapy, guided self-help addresses the challenges patients are facing with a ‘here and now’ focus.
As a form of therapy, guided self-help is NICE-recommended for treating mild to moderate mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, panic disorder, phobias and general stress. Providing patients with access to evidence-based psychological treatments, such as guided self-help, can prevent the need for further treatment.
Working with a psychological wellbeing practitioner (PWP), you will be supported and guided through a series of self-help materials. This process can be done either in person, over the phone or via secure video call.
Before the guided self-help sessions begin, you will be asked to look through a variety of materials, such as workbooks or an online computer course. During your session, you’ll then work with your PWP to explore what you have learnt. Most importantly, you will look at how you can apply these strategies to your individual situation.
For guided self-help, you don’t need a referral from your GP, but if you feel more comfortable speaking to them about your options, it is worthwhile making an appointment to have an initial discussion.
If you choose to refer yourself directly, you will need to find a psychological therapies service that operates in your area. You can find this by clicking here.
We offer flexible online guided self-help which you can access from the comfort of your own home and at a time that suits you; sessions are available 7 days a week between 8am – 10pm.
Please note that this service is not designed for emergencies. If you need urgent help or you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, you can find emergency support here.
Have any questions about our services? Whether you’re wondering about how we can help your health goals, or assist your healthcare organisation, we’d love to hear from you.
